The Royal Family of Gannelore was a rich and powerful family that rose to its title of “Royal” in the early days of Gannelore’s settlement. The Sylvana family, for which the state is later named, made much of its money in the quarrying of stone in Molvania and the further afar Barrowhills.

Origins and Rise to Power

The Sylvana family stone was used to build much of Gannelore’s foundations, building the family’s wealth. Following the family’s rise to royalty, the family rapidly diversified their portfolio, allowing them to subsidize the stone to enable the rapid growth of Gannelore’s construction industry.

The Sylvana family’s rise to power was gradual but inevitable. As Gannelore grew from a small settlement into a major city, the family’s control over the region’s most valuable resource - high-quality building stone - gave them immense influence. They used this influence not only to amass wealth but to position themselves as the natural leaders of the growing elvish community.

The Early Sylvana Rulers

The first recorded head of the Royal Family of Gannelore was Aelindra Sylvana, who established the family’s claim to leadership around 1,800 years before The Race Wars. Aelindra Sylvana was known for her wisdom and her ability to negotiate with the distant Falderian Empire while maintaining Gannelore’s autonomy.

Her successor, Thalorin Sylvana, expanded the family’s influence beyond stone quarrying into trade, agriculture, and magical research. Thalorin Sylvana established the first formal agreements with the Falderian Empire, ensuring that Gannelore would remain largely self-governing while paying tribute to the empire.

Elandra Sylvana, Thalorin Sylvana’s daughter, was perhaps the most beloved of the early rulers. She invested heavily in the arts and education, founding Gannelore’s first university and establishing the city’s famous libraries. Under her rule, Gannelore became known as a center of learning and culture throughout Falderia.

The Golden Age Rulers

The middle period of Sylvana rule (approximately 1,200 to 400 years before The Race Wars) is often called the “Golden Age” of the family. During this time, Gannelore reached the height of its prosperity and influence.

Kaelindra Sylvana (ruled 1,200-1,100 years before The Race Wars) was known as “The Builder” for her ambitious construction projects. She commissioned the city’s most magnificent buildings, including the Grand Palace, the Tower of Knowledge, and the Gardens of Eternal Spring.

Thalorin II Sylvana (ruled 1,100-950 years before The Race Wars) was called “The Diplomat” for his skill in maintaining peaceful relations with the Falderian Empire while gradually increasing Gannelore’s autonomy. He established the city’s first formal military, though it remained small and ceremonial.

Aelindra II Sylvana (ruled 950-800 years before The Race Wars) was known as “The Scholar” for her patronage of magical research and her personal studies in ancient elvish lore. She established the Gannelore Academy of Magic, which became one of the most prestigious magical institutions in Falderia.

The Decline and Growing Tensions

The later Sylvana rulers faced increasing challenges as the Falderian Empire became more centralized and demanding. The elvish population of Gannelore grew increasingly discontented with human rule, and the Sylvana family found themselves caught between their people’s desires and their obligations to the empire.

Kaelorin Sylvana (ruled 400-300 years before The Race Wars) was the first ruler to face serious challenges to the family’s authority. During his rule, the first major protests against Falderian rule occurred in Gannelore. Kaelorin Sylvana tried to maintain the status quo, but his attempts to appease both sides satisfied neither.

Thalindra Sylvana (ruled 300-200 years before The Race Wars) was known as “The Compromiser” for her attempts to find middle ground between her people and the empire. She established the first formal council of elvish elders to advise the royal family, but this only served to highlight the growing divide between the people and their rulers.

Elandorin Sylvana (ruled 25-15 years before The Race Wars) was the last ruler before Ilkaen Sylvana. He was known for his military reforms and his attempts to strengthen Gannelore’s defenses. However, his rule was marked by increasing tension and the first serious calls for secession from the Falderian Empire. Over his decade-long rule, tensions steadily built as the elvish population grew increasingly frustrated with Falderian policies.

The Final Ruler

At the time of The Race Wars, the family was headed by Ilkaen Sylvana, who came to power 15 years before the war began. She was already 450 years old when she took the throne, the oldest a Sylvana ever came to power. Her great-grandfather, the previous head of the family, passed away peacefully one winter’s evening, leaving Ilkaen to take the helm.

Things were rough to begin with. Although wiser than previous heads who’d come to power, Ilkaen had the disadvantage of a discontent populace. The people of Gannelore were quickly growing discontent for the laws of the Falderian Empire.

Over the course of her 15-year reign, the tension continued to build. Riots in the streets of Gannelore called for secession from Falderia. Protests at the royal palace called for the family to seek reparations for unjust rule. Despite the noise, Ilkaen Sylvana remained steadfast in her position to remain within the empire, making the most of Gannelore’s fortunate location.

The End of the Line

On the anniversary of 15 years as the head of the Royal Family of Gannelore, Ilkaen Sylvana made a decision that would end the Sylvana bloodline. Gannelore joined Eschenfeld in their militarized protest against the Falderian Empire.

During the massacre of Gannelore, Ilkaen watched her children and grandchildren slaughtered before her. Every prominent member of her family was brought to the stairs of the royal palace, and slowly tortured to death by the monstrous commanders of the Falderian Empire armies. Ilkaen Sylvana was spared, a message to Gannelore that they were yet allowed to get in line and remain within the Falderian Empire.

The family’s lineage ended during the flooding of Gannelore, when Ilkaen Sylvana herself perished in the waters that consumed her ancestral home.

Legacy

The Sylvana family’s legacy lives on in the state that bears their name, though their bloodline ended with the flooding of their ancestral home. The family’s influence on elvish culture and politics in Falderia cannot be overstated - they ruled Gannelore for nearly two millennia and shaped the development of elvish civilization in the region.

Today, the name “Sylvana” is synonymous with elvish royalty and the lost glory of Gannelore. The family’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the cost of power and the price of freedom.
